Wall of Sand on Number 17 at Candler Hills Golf Course

You’ve almost completed your round when on number 17…

…You come face-to-face with a Wall of Sand.

Well… at least that’s what it looks like when you arrive at the tee of this par 3.

If the pin is on the left side of the green, you are in good shape. You would play a little (to borrow a baseball term here) “hit and run” shot. The left side of the green is very open and really is easy to run the ball right to the hole.

But if the pin is in the middle section of this green or to the right, then your tee shot will be all carry over the bunkers. 

The green is 47 yards wide with a depth of 28 yards. The elevation change on this green can be pretty dramatic, depending on where your ball lands. From right to left is the most change with up to 4 feet of drop.

There is a slight ridge that enters from the left side of the green at about the mid point front to back and makes a slight plateau.  Other than that slight flat spot… every putt on this green is going to be moving left or right. There is one great tip that can be offered about this green… if the pin is to the right side of the green and your tee shot goes to the right of the flag… and hits the green… the ball will funnel back toward the cup with the contour that is on that side of the green. If you have a hole-in-one on number 17… unless the pin is on the left… you will never see it go in the hole. Just pick it out of the hole and consider yourself lucky!
