5th Annual Big Bird Fly-in

The sky is the limit as the On Top of the World R/C Flyers present their 5th Annual Big Bird Fly-In. The Big Bird Fly-In is an IMAA sanctioned event and is open to all large scale radio controlled aircraft. The event will be held at the club’s private airfield located within On Top of the World Communities. If you are a “big bird flyer,” then you should plan to be in Ocala, Florida on Saturday, March 27th for this over-the-top event.

Event coordinator Doug Ensley said, “On Top of the World Communities is perfect for the avid flyer. While we are at the field flying, our spouses are enjoying the many clubs and social activities that are available here, experiencing the variety of classes presented by the Master the Possibilities life long learning center or indulging in spa and salon treatments at The Ranch Fitness Center & Spa, all located right here in the community.”

The Big Bird Fly-In is one of the highlights of the spring flying at On Top of the World. “We really never know how many to expect when we put on an open event like this, but we are planning for up to 75 planes to be on display for the event,” said Ensley. “The major part of this event is for the flyers from outside the community to fly at our field for the day… but the benefit is a day of social camaraderie and sharing of stories between the pilots, builders and their families,” Doug added.

Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. and flying begins at 9:00 a.m. There is plenty of free parking at the field. You may want to to bring your own chairs as there is a limited number of chairs available under the shaded pavilion. There is no registration fee to fly for the day, but all pilots will be required to complete a Hold Harmless Agreement as part of their registration. The only restrictions on the event are that the plane must meet the requirements of the IMAA as a large scale model and that there can be no jets flown at the event.

The R/C Flyers, with over 130 members, enjoy sponsoring and hosting three major events each year so fellow R/C flyers may enjoy the hobby together. On Top of the World R/C Flyers is one of over 200 clubs and organizations offering a variety of activities in and around the community.

In November, the R/C Flyers club hosted the 8th Annual Fun Fly, where approximately 85 planes joined in for the event. The spectators had a great time looking at the planes and watching the maneuvers of the skilled pilots. Upcoming in April, the club will host a SAM Antique Model Fly-In, displaying and flying some incredible antique and old time model planes.
